We are often asked "At what point does injection moulding become cost effective, against the Bafbox", and many other
similar questions. It is not however as clear cut as this, with no definitive answer.
A pertinent way to tackle this area is to ask you, the designer a few questions, after which you should be in a good
position to decide which route you want to take.
Do you need prototypes quickly, to evaluate both technical and market requirements?
Once you have settled on a design, how certain are you of your market size?
How quickly do you need to get into the market, to remain one step ahead of your competitors, weeks or months?
How certain are you that the design will not change due to changing component technologies, market requirement, or other
factors?
How involved do you want to get in the enclosure design?
Would your time be better used on your area of expertise?
How much capital do you want to tie up in or have available for a dedicated, relatively inflexible tool?
Once you have formulated answers to these questions, and assessed the risks associated with laying down relatively large
capital sums against market uncertainty, you should be in a position to provide yourself with an answer.
